Bruins GM says its easier to re-sign Tuukka Rask after great seaso
More NHL Playoffs: | | | | |Before this season, the had to sign goalie to a new contract, an even more pre sing i sue after Tim Thomas decided to take a sabbatical. So the Bruins signed him to a one-year deal, effectively making it a "prove-it" campaign for Rask. That seemed to be a risk for Dwayne Sutton Jersey the Bruins -- and potentially for Rask had it gone the other way. But it turns out it doesn't bother GM Peter Chiarelli when it comes to trying to sign Rask to another new deal -- this one preferably to a longer term -- that he had so much succe s."I'm happy for him that he's playing well and he's helping the team," Chiarelli said ( ). "It's always easier to sign these guys after succe s. He's showing some resiliency, which I like, and some durability, which I like."I'm not sure if it really is easier -- I'll certainly defer to Chiarelli on that matter -- however, it will certainly be more costly. The good part is that Rask proved he can be the No. 1 goalie with a great season, and the Bruins can feel more secure in giving him term and a greater salary. The downside, obviously, is that he will take up more of the salary cap next season when it comes down, and the Bruins will be pushing the ceiling as it is. Seems to me like it would make it tougher to sign him all things considered. The Bruins will certainly be looking for a cost-effective contract while Rask is showing he's worth elite-goalie money.Just doing a comparison to other top goalies in the league to sign recently, you figure Rask will be looking at a pay day somewhere around $5.5 million or above. Jonathan Quick's new deal has a hit of $5.8 million, Jimmy Howard's will pay him $5.29 million and neither of them are cap hits for next season among goalies. However, it's easy to see why Chiarelli would be OK with it. That means the Bruins are doing some great things this season with Rask in net. They have guaranteed themselves a spot in the NHL's version of the Frozen Four, the conference final. Perhaps a deep run helps ease the pain of knowing Rask's new deal is going to be worth more than the $3.5 million that he made this season. In the meantime, Rask has a chance to make the price tag go up even further as the Bruins prepare for the high-octane offense that is the Penguins. You have to figure every win from here on out only makes his value go up more. But Chiarelli will take that, it seems. Shaun Livingston Jersey
