In an unprecedented move, Google has put forward a $20,000 bounty for security researchers who can successfully breach its Chrome browser during the annual CanSecWest security conference's Pwn2Own competition. This marks the first time any browser developer has financially contributed to this renowned hacking contest.
Now in its fifth year, Pwn2Own invites cybersecurity experts to attempt breaking various browsers including Safari, Internet Explorer, and Firefox. Participants work on contest-provided Windows 7 machines, with successful hackers winning both the computer used and a $15,000 cash prize.
Chrome presents a particularly formidable challenge due to its sandbox architecture, which isolates system processes for enhanced security. Any successful exploitation would require breaking through this sandbox protection before executing malicious code.
Beyond the monetary reward, Google is also offering a CR-48 netbook as an additional prize, though the actual hacking must be performed on the competition's designated machines.
Aaron Portnoy, manager of HP TippingPoint's security research team which organizes the event, praised Google's initiative: "We're always in favor of rewarding security researchers for the work they too-often do for free."
The competition extends beyond browsers to include mobile platforms, with similar rewards for successfully hacking BlackBerry OS, iOS, and Android devices.
